Objectives

  • Enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of hydromet investments.
  • Foster a collaborative partnership among members, leverage competencies and expertise.
  • Work towards strengthening the capacity of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services.
  • Commit to better coordination and design of investments to support developing countries.
  • Fostering programmatic approaches and leveraging private sector resources for modernizing hydromet infrastructure.

2nd Hydromet Gap Report 2024 presenteds an analysis based on Country Hydromet Diagnostics (CHD) conducted in 20 least-developed countries and small island developing States

29 April 2024: Alliance Members agree to new priority actions for the way forward
  • Promote the Country Hydromet Diagnostics as a universally utilized tool for informing investments in hydrometeorological services
  • Continue publishing regular Hydromet Gap Reports capturing data, trends and insights from the gradually increasing sample of countries covered,
  • Sustain and expand the Systematic Observations Financing Facility,
  • Optimize financial tracking of early warning systems investments to effectively manage disaster risks associated with climate-related hazards
  • Enhance development of partner coordination at the regional level for a more focused and targeted approach to supporting hydrometeorological services
  • Climate Science Information for Climate Action: Enabling NMHSs in mobilizing climate and development finance
  • Address the gap in middle-income countries
  • Continue to advocate for and champion sustainable national funding

COP28 in December 2023
  • SOFF presented its first action report which captures that in 1.5 years of operations,
  • 60 countries have already received SOFF support,
  • 6 frontrunners approved for investment support

  • Reflected lessons learned and feedback from the CHD road-testing with 16 countries
  • Additional consultations with stakeholders

3 November 2021 Launch of SOFF at COP 26
  • UN specialized fund co-created by WMO, UNDP and UNEP
  • Close the climate and weather observations data gap in LDCs and SIDS
  • Provides long-term financial and technical assistance to support the generation and international sharing of basic weather and climate observations, according to (GBON) regulations.

8 July 2021: First Hydromet Gap Report Published
  • Track progress on closing the global hydromet capacity gap
  • Application of CHD in 16 countries

CHD : Prototype for road-testing
  • The CHD responded to the need for a standardized, integrated and operational tool and approach for diagnosing National Meteorological Services.
  • 1st phase-draft prototype developed to be road-tested with selected countries.
